East Side Survives and Advances Twice On Sunday at Northeast Regional
Middletown CT --- Regan Aghdam had a hand in all three runs in a 3-1 win over Rochester, NH in the eye-opener and four different
Raiders slugged three hits - including Jono Crimmin - in a 14-7 triumph over Branford, CT in the nightcap as East Side Post 201
advanced to the final day of the 2013 American Legion Baseball Northeast Regional. The Raiders will face Barnstable in a rematch of the
Massachusetts National Bound State Tournament title game at 1:00pm. The winner of that game takes on Branford for a berth in the 2013
American Legion Baseball World Series in Shelby, NC, which begins on Friday, August 16.
Aghdam and Tim Brutto each had a 2-for-4 morning while Aghdam and Jack Riley combined to drive in all three runs with two out
Riley allowed an unearned run on three hits and struck out four and issued six walks in five innings. Peter Bovenzi yielded two hits while
fanning seven and walking one in the final four frames en route to the win (2-2).
The game was scoreless until Rochester plated a run courtesy of a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fourth. East Side evened the game
when Aghdam scored from first on Riley's double in the bottom of the sixth.
With a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, Aghdam delivered a double down the left field line to help the
Raiders take the 3-1 lead. A swinging strikeout and two fly outs to left field sealed Post 201's first victory of the day.
After playing the waiting game, East Side returned to Palmer Field for a 7:30 tilt against Branford, CT.
Crimmin, Aghdam, Jimmy Smith and Nate Frederick each collected three hits while Riley and Bovenzi chipped in with two apiece.
Frederick led the way with three RBI and Riley crossed home plate three times for East Side. Brutto drew a three of the Raiders five walks
on the night.
Branford struck first on an RBI single in the bottom of the first. East Side responded with two runs in the top of the second. Frederick
doubled down the left field line to chase home Riley. Crimmin then plated Aghdam as he connected on the first pitch he saw in regional
competition, a single to short.
Post 201 then began to pull away in the third. Frederick, who has been behind the plate for every East Side pitch in the regional, drove in
two with a double to center.
Branford inched closer with a run in the third and in the fourth but East Side exploded for six runs in the fifth. The outburst, which was
aided by five hits and two miscues, began with an RBI single by Cam Frederick. Brutto capped the uprising with a sacrifice fly.
Post 83 continued to chip away at the lead with a run in the sixth and the seventh but the Raiders grabbed the runs back in the eighth
coutest of RBI hits by Riley and Bovenzi.
East Side added an insurance run in the ninth when Erik Lacaire scampered home on a wild pitch. Branford, down to its final three outs,
claimed two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Zach Zona, who last pitched on Thursday, improved to 7-1 as he allowed five runs - three earned - on eight hits with six strikeouts and
five walks in seven innings. Brutto struck out one in a scoreless eighth, while Bovenzi, making his second appearance of the day, finished
the game for the Raiders.
Rochester, NH finished its season 20-7 while East Side is 24-10 and Branford now sits at 35-2.
